What is the Bowen Technique

This is a realigning muscle-release therapy consisting of a dynamic series of gentle, precise and relaxing "rolling" moves over muscles and soft tissue. Bowen empowers the body's own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony. The moves encourage the body to rebalance itself both structurally and also in terms of its organs and systems. For this reason, Bowen is effective in treating all kinds of aches and pains as well as imbalances within body systems: respiratory, digestive, circulatory, reproductive, etc. Many clients find the simplicity of this therapy remarkable and are amazed at its effectiveness for all kinds of health problems.

Bowen is non-invasive with NO forceful manipulation.

Sometimes during this calming and relaxing treatment the client may feel subtle responses and fine adjustments taking place as they unwind.

Treatments are usually performed over light clothing and can last anywhere from 15 to 50 minutes. Often clients will only need a minimal number of sessions.

It is not normally helpful to receive other bodywork therapies (such as deep tissue massage) within a few days of receiving Bowen. However, the Emmett Technique is a closely-related therapy which has been found to enhance the beneficial effects of Bowen. Liz tends to use Bowen & Emmett together in a treatment as she finds the two techniques dovetail each other beautifully with successful outcomes being achieved much sooner.

The History of Bowen

The Bowen Technique was pioneered by Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong in Victoria, Australia. Tom devoted a lifetime to developing his gentle and innovative approach. The Webb Report of 1975 - an Australian Government Survey on natural therapies - revealed him to be treating a staggering 13,000 patients a year, rarely seeing anyone more than once or twice.

He was an immensely gifted therapist, having an amazing ability to "read the body and correct imbalances extremely quickly. His approach was a simple energy correction procedure to instigate a change in the balance of the body, bringing the body's own healing abilities into action.

Before Tom's death in 1982, he shared some of his methods and ideas with six other therapists, known as "Tom's Boys." It is from the work of these people that we now have several great therapies based upon the life work of Thomas Bowen. The most commonly taught is "The Bowen Technique which arrived in the UK around 1993, a technique now widely practised here.
